General Education Requirements
Effective fall 2010, UCSC adopted a new pattern of general education requirements. The codes you see in the Class Search and in the General Catalog represent both the old and the new GEs. Information about the general education requirements is available in the General Catalog.
Catalog Rights ensure that when graduation requirements change, continuing students can follow the requirements in effect at the time of their admission to UCSC. The catalog rights policy is available in the "Planning Your Academic Program" section of the General Catalog.
Which students follow the new general education requirements, and which follow the prior requirements?
- Students admitted as frosh in fall 2010 or later MUST follow the new general education requirements.
- Students admitted before fall 2010 are eligible to follow the requirements in effect at the time of their admission or those established subsequently, unless they have had a break in attendance of greater than two years. Review the catalog rights policy, and contact an academic adviser at your college if you have questions about how this policy applies to you.
- Transfer students may choose to follow requirements published in a UCSC General Catalog from the time they initially entered a previous collegiate institution, but no more than three years prior to their transfer to UCSC. Students admitted as upper-division (junior or senior) transfer students in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 academic years will have their general education requirements initially evaluated based on the requirements in effect in 2008-2009 to facilitate transition to the university. Students admitted as upper-division transfer students in the 2012-2013 academic year will have their general education requirements initially evaluated based on the requirements in effect in 2009-2010. Students who entered during these times and who wish to follow a newer set of requirements may do so by meeting with a college adviser and requesting a change to their general education catalog requirements.
IDENTIFYING GE COURSES
When you use the Class Search function in the online Schedule of Classes, the codes you see in the Class Search represent both the old and the new GEs. Your Academic Advisement Report will tell you which GEs you need to complete; use this information to select the appropriate GE courses.
OLD GE CODES: IH, IN, IS, TH, TN, TS, Q, C1/C2 or C, A, W or DC, & E.
NEW GE CODES: CC, ER, IM, MF, SI, SR, TA, PE-E, PE-H, PE-T, PR-C, PR-E, PR-S, C1 & C2, & DC.
At the time of graduation, degree requirements are checked based on the catalog requirements recorded in MyUCSC (typically the requirements in effect at the time of admission to UCSC). If you would like to follow a different set of requirements, you must contact an adviser at your college to discuss your options and request that your requirement term be changed online. You will not graduate if you have not satisfied the GE requirements on record for you.
