First-Year Writing Requirements at UCSC The first-year writing requirements at UCSC consist of the Entry-Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), Composition 1 (C1) and Composition 2 (C2). All incoming lower-division students will be placed in an appropriate section of their college core course, depending on what requirements they have yet to satisfy when they enter. All sections of the core courses provide instruction in critical reading, analytical writing, and speaking in seminar; C2 sections provide instruction in research skills as well. All sections carry five units of credit and consider approximately the same material. ELWR: You have satisfied the ELWR (formerly called the Subject A Requirement) if you received: A 680 or better on the SAT II Writing Test or a 680 or better on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; a score of 8 or above on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) given in May; a 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; a 5 or above on the IB High Level English A exam or a 6 or above on the IB Standard Level English A Exam; or a 3 or above on the AP English exam. If you did not take the May AWPE, you may take it on the campus in September (but you may not take it on the campus if you did take it in May). You have also satisfied the ELWR if you passed a transfer-level composition course at a college or university with a C or better. If you have not satisfied the ELWR by the time classes begin, you will be placed in a section of the college core course that helps you develop your writing. We recommend that you also sign up to work with a writing assistant. You will have additional chances to satisfy the ELWR later in your first year. Once you pass the ELWR, you may enroll in Writing 2. C1: If you have satisfied the ELWR but not the C1 requirement, you will be placed in a section of the core course that satisfies C1. Assuming you pass core with a C or better, you may take Writing 2 (which satisfies the C2 requirement). C2: If you enter UCSC having received a 10 or above on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam in May or September; a 4 or above on the AP exam; or a 5 or above on the IBH Higher Level English A exam (or if you have passed a transfer-level course at a community college with a C or better), you have satisfied the C1 requirement. You will be placed in a section of the core course that satisfies C2; passing that course means that you will not go on to take Writing 2. You must satisfy the ELWR requirement by the end of your 4th quarter and your C1 and C2 requirements prior to your 7th. These requirements are new, so be sure you get information from your college if you have questions. Note: Be sure that you have made arrangements to have any AP scores or college transcripts sent to UCSC’s Admissions Office. The sooner that we have this information, the more accurately we will be able to place and advise you. |
