Getting started in Latin American and Latino Studies: 2023-2024 Entering Frosh

Students are admitted to UCSC with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission to UCSC does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major. Students must be declared in a major by the end of the second year (or equivalent), so learning about and preparing for a major is a primary goal for first-year students.

Importance of an early start:

Students interested in the LALS B.A. are encouraged to enroll in LALS 1: Introduction to Latin American and Latino Studies, at their earliest opportunity. This introductory course is required for all LALS majors, and it’s a great overview of our department.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Frosh who intend to pursue this major should do the following things prior to the beginning of fall term...
  • Review the major programs offered by LALS, and explore our course offerings for the 2023-24 academic year, to make a plan for taking your first LALS class.
  • Contact LALS Advising to make an academic plan with the courses required to graduate.
  • If you are pursuing the optional LALS Language Intensive concentration, contact the LALS Advisor about preparation for LALS courses taught in Spanish or study abroad options to take courses taught in Portuguese or an indigenous language.

Other Information:

In addition to courses offered at UCSC, students may fulfill the optional Language Intensive concentration through appropriate courses taken while participating in a Global Engagement study away program.
