Getting Started in Applied Physics: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

 Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

If you listed this major on your UCSC admission application, your record has been screened for major preparation. Review transfer screening, getting started, and major qualification requirements in the General Catalog.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • Students who have taken college-level transferable classes that may apply to the requirements of this major should submit an unofficial transcript to the Physics advisor prior to July 1, in addition to the official transcript that is required by the UCSC Admissions Office.

...and should take these courses their first term:

  • PHYS 5D, unless they have credit for the course, in which case PHYS 102;
  • MATH 23B, unless they have credit for the course, in which case they may enroll in PHYS 116A unless they have credit for the course, or an elective or general education course;
  • ASTR 119, unless they have knowledge of the Python programming language and basic statistics, in which case they may enroll in PHYS 133 after obtaining a permission code.

Students who have completed courses that should be equivalent to PHYS 5D or MATH 23B but are not formally articulated as such should contact the undergraduate advisor to have their courses evaluated.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Sign up for a wait list when available: (Email physicsadvising@ucsc.edu if you have questions.)

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

Transfer students should contact the undergraduate advisor to draw up an academic plan.

Other Information:

Students who are proposed in a different major (other than physics or physics (astrophysics)) and have advanced standing when they come to UC Santa Cruz require permission from the department to change into the major.
