Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Transfer students must pass the Art Department Portfolio Review in April to pursue the art major in their first term. If you were admitted to UCSC and would now like to switch to the Art major, please contact the Art Advisor as soon as possible at artadvisor@ucsc.edu to discuss an off-cycle portfolio review.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

• Those students who passed the portfolio review in April will petition to officially declare the major during summer orientation or early in their first term.
• It is advised that students complete all three of their lower division studios at the community college. It is also highly recommended that junior transfers take history of art and visual culture courses at the community college, including one in Western art and culture and one in non-Western art and culture.

...and should take these courses their first term:

The undergraduate advisor will assist junior transfers in enrolling in one or two upper division studios depending on availability. Please make sure you are checking your email for information on the Art major course selection process!

Special enrollment procedures:

During the summer, the Art Advisor will email all entering transfer students about a lottery process to determine which courses each student will enroll in during their first term. The art advisor will then issue permission numbers to each student for their first term enrollment (this process will change after your first term!) Once you receive the permission numbers from the Art Advisor, enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

Many art students enjoy taking additional classes (beyond those that are required) in History of Art and Visual Culture. Students should also consider taking classes in other academic departments that give them creative ideas on which to base their art.

Other Information:

Students are notified of the results of the portfolio review before they need to submit their Statement of Intent to Register for UCSC. Acceptance to UCSC does not guarantee admission to the Art Program, nor does passing the portfolio review guarantee admission to UCSC.
