Getting Started in Environmental Sciences B.S.: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

If you listed this major on your UCSC admission application, your record has been screened for major preparation.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • Students who have taken college-level transferable classes that may apply to the requirements of this major should submit an unofficial transcript to the advisor prior to July 1, in addition to the official transcript that is required by the UCSC Admissions Office.
  • Students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to complete all lower- division mathematics and science prerequisites appropriate to their concentration of interest prior to transfer.

...and should take these courses their first term:

If you have completed the recommended transfer course work then enroll in:

  • ESCI 160: Data Analysis in the Environmental Sciences
  • Upper-division major elective

Every transfer student plan is unique. Students will receive an email with their articulated course work and recommendations for first quarter enrollment.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact the Environmental Sciences undergraduate advisor. (Email epsadvising@ucsc.edu if you have questions.)

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Skills important for success in this major:

Science majors require skills in critical and logical thought, complex problem solving using scientific rules and methods, and deductive and inductive reasoning.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

The suggested course load is two major classes per quarter; if students do not have additional general education requirements to satisfy, they can utilize the third course each quarter to pursue other interests.

Other Information:

The Environmental Sciences BS major is sponsored by the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department.

The purpose of the Environmental Sciences (ESCI) major at UCSC is to educate students interested in environmental science problems and issues, with a focus on issues within the physical sciences. The major specializes primarily on the following areas of study:

  • Climate and climate change: Earth's past, present, and future climate
  • Global biogeochemical cycles: Cycles of water, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, mercury, etc.
