Getting Started in History: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major: |
The history major has no qualification requirements. All students, including transfers, are eligible to pursue this major, even if they did not list history on their UC Santa Cruz application. It is advisable to complete at least one lower-division history course (1-99) before declaring, but it is not required. Students who plan on majoring in history are encouraged to declare as soon as possible. Students should submit a petition to declare before or by their declaration deadline quarter. |

HIS 100: Historical Skills and Methods, and at least one upper division history course (HIS 100-189) that interests you. Exploring and pursuing your interests is a great way to get started in this major! |

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above: |
Students who are unable to enroll in HIS 100 are advised to sign up on the course wait list. Students may also take HIS 100 in winter quarter. Students unable to enroll in their first choice upper division history class are advised to sign up on the class wait list and enroll in an alternate/backup upper division history course. |

Since this major is reading and writing intensive, the suggested course load is two major classes per quarter. If students do not have additional general education requirements to satisfy, then they can utilize the third course each quarter to pursue other interests. |

Learn more about the skills you’ll develop as a history major, and what you can do with those skills after you graduate. Familiarize yourself with the Department of History General Course Catalog and the history faculty. Learning about the department’s courses and the faculty who teach them will help you make informed decisions about your history major plan and future course selection. Transfer students may apply up to three history courses completed at another college or university to their history major requirements, with no more than two courses from any single area of concentration.
