Getting Started in Latin American and Latino Studies: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog. Contact lalsadvising@ucsc.edu with any questions, including questions about transfer courses in LALS, and to create an academic plan to graduate. Transfer students typically declare the LALS major in their second quarter at UCSC.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • If you have taken college-level transferable classes that could potentially be used towards the LALS major, please contact the undergraduate advisor.
  • Students may find it useful to review our LALS Current Classes as they plan out their first year at UCSC.
  • Contact LALS Advising to make an academic plan with the courses required to graduate.
  • If you are pursuing the optional LALS Language Intensive concentration, contact the LALS Advisor about preparation for LALS courses taught in Spanish or study abroad options to take courses taught in Portuguese or an indigenous language. The LALS BA does not require second language proficiency.

...and should take these courses their first term:

LALS 1: Introduction to Latin American and Latino Studies and LALS 100: Concepts and Theories in Latin American and Latino Studies.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact LALS Advising. Enrollment in these courses is guaranteed for LALS students.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

LALS strongly encourages students to further enrich their education by studying abroad, participating in community-based internships, and/or conducting undergraduate research. To learn more about these opportunities, contact LALS Advising or review information on our website about Study Abroad and getting started in Undergraduate Research.
