Getting Started in Language Studies: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog. Transfer students should take LING 50 and a second qualifying course in their first quarter at UC, Santa Cruz. Qualifying courses are also available in Summer Session.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

Review information on the Languages and Applied Linguistics website to determine whether you need language placement.

...and should take these courses their first term:

  • LING 50: Introduction to Linguistics
  • LING 53: Semantics I
  • Language course (if possible, based on availability of language course at the appropriate level)

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Use the waitlist in the enrollment system. Waitlists will be available when open enrollment begins on August 28th.

Special enrollment procedures:

Contact the Linguistics Department undergraduate advisor (ling@ucsc.edu) for permission numbers to enroll in LING 50 and LING 53 if the courses are full.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

Courses in Applied Linguistics. LING 50 is a prerequisite for many Applied Linguistics as well as Linguistics upper division courses.

Other Information:

Please contact the Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics at languages@ucsc.edu if you have questions about placement. Many language placement exams take place once a year, before classes start in September. It is crucial that transfer students start foreign language study as soon as possible. Students pursuing the concentration in Japanese or Chinese should place into Level 4 (Level 5 for students entering in the winter term) or higher when they enter UCSC, if they wish to complete the major in two years. Students in other languages may be able to complete the major in two years if they have completed general education requirements. Transfer students admitted to UC Santa Cruz for the winter term who do not place into Level 2 or higher in a language placement test when they enter UCSC may not be able to complete the major in a timely manner.
