Getting Started in Theater Arts: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Transfer students are eligible to declare as early as their first quarter even if they have not completed any theater arts courses prior to transferring to UC Santa Cruz. Transfer students entering as juniors are required by the university to declare a major no later than the major declaration deadline in their second quarter on campus and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Review Transfer Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog for details.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

Students who have taken college-level transferable classes that may apply to the requirements of this major should email unofficial transcripts as early as possible to theater-ugradadv@ucsc.edu, moonr@ucsc.edu (the program’s academic advisor for review.

...and should take these courses their first term:

One or more of the following, according to your interests (and in consultation with the department advisor to be sure you have not already taken college courses that fulfill these requirements):

  • THEA 10: Introduction to Design (THEA 10 is the prerequisite for further progress in most other technical/design courses),
  • THEA 20: Introduction to Acting (for students with little or no prior experience in acting),
  • THEA 21: Acting Studio 1 (for students with some acting experience who are comfortable auditioning),
  • THEA 50: Fundamentals of Theater Production (2 units)
  • THEA 61A: Ancient and Medieval Drama,
  • Any of the following lower division practice-based dance classes:
    • THEA 30 Intro to Dance Theory & Technique,
    • THEA 31A Dance Studio I: Asian or Asian Diasporic Practice,
    • THEA 31B Dance Studio I: Ballet, THEA 31C Dance Studio I,
    • THEA 36 Intro to Dance Composition,
    • THEA 37 African Dance,
    • THEA 80Z Indian Dance.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact the major academic advisor: theater-ugradadv@ucsc.edu.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your enrollment appointment time listed in your MyUCSC portal. NOTE: Some courses are admission-by-audition or require permission of the instructor to enroll. The Schedule of Classes should note these in the Class Notes section of the course, and you may contact the department for more information on classes with these enrollment restrictions: theater-ugradadv@ucsc.edu.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

Courses in many other departments can inform theater work (art, music, art history, film, history, literature, etc.). The suggested course load is two major classes per quarter plus a third 5-unit class (the standard unit load is 15, and the minimum is 12 units); if students do not have additional general education requirements to satisfy, they can utilize the third course each quarter to pursue other interests.

Other Information:

After making an academic plan with the department advisor, transfer students should declare the major during their first quarter on campus and are required by the university to declare by their second quarter. Students are encouraged to update the academic plan quarterly, together with their major advisor, prior to the start of enrollment for each quarter. Advising Week (quarterly dates listed in the Academic and Administrative Calendar) is an ideal time to meet with advisors. This department offers advising appointments through Navigate Slug Success.
