Returning to UCSC

Returning to UCSC

Whether you’re coming back from an approved leave of absence or reapplying after time away, UC Santa Cruz offers clear steps and support to help you resume your studies. This page outlines the process, deadlines, and resources to guide your successful return.

How to Return to UC Santa Cruz

For students on an approved Leave of Absence:

  • When your leave of absence was approved, you indicated a return quarter, and will receive an email about enrolling in classes for that return quarter. No action is needed. If you’d like to change your Leave of Absence return quarter- please contact your college advisors.

For students who have been away from UCSC, and not on an approved Leave of Absence (for example: withdrew from the university, were discontinued for non-enrollment, barred from enrollment, denied candidacy for graduation, etc):

  • Your academic advisors are happy to help you plan for your return to UCSC. Before you complete a Request to Return form, we recommend you connect with your college and major advisors to discuss your plans to return and identify any advising-related issues that may need to be addressed as part of the return process.

Once you’ve connected with your advisors, you will next need to complete a Request to Return form. Please keep in mind the filing periods below, and make sure that you apply for your intended return quarter accordingly:

  • Fall Filing Period: January 1 – March 31
  • Extended Fall Filing Period*: April 1 – May 31
  • Summer Filing Period: Jan 1 – May 31
  • Winter Filing Period: July 1 – September 30
  • Spring Filing Period: October 1 – December 31

*Students submitting their form during the Extended Filing Period will have a late enrollment appointment and fewer class offerings. This will impact your college’s decision whether or not to grant your request to return. We strongly recommend submitting your request as soon as possible in the regular filing period, well before the filing deadline.

Find the Request Return Form

In order to complete the Request to Return eForm, you will need to access to your my.ucsc.edu portal. If you have trouble accessing your portal, or you were a student here before the portal launched, you will need to email help@ucsc.edu or call (831) 459-HELP to get set up with access.

Degree Completion Program: Once a Slug, Always a Slug

UC Santa Cruz is committed to student success and we believe that higher education can have great, positive impact on people’s lives. Undergraduate Academic Advising’s mission is to partner with students to identify and pursue paths to graduation that support their educational goals and post graduation plans, and thereby make meaningful change for themselves, their families, and communities. Our degree completion program is a collaborative initiative hosted by the Office of Campus Advising Coordination to provide:

  • Graduation workshops for current undergraduates who are close to graduation
  • Proactive follow-up for undergraduates who were recently denied graduation
  • Targeted outreach to former undergraduates who stopped out, but are close to completing degree requirements

We collaborate with major advisors, and colleagues in Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Office for African, Black, Caribbean (ABC) Student SuccessSTARRS – Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students, Financial Aid & Scholarships, and the Office of the Registrar to ensure we are providing students the full range of support they may need to complete their degrees.

If you are interested in re-engaging with UC Santa Cruz to complete your undergraduate degree, or just want to explore your options, complete this intake form to learn more. We look forward to hearing from you.
