Undergraduate Academic Advising Mission
Academic advising plays a central role in supporting student success. At UC Santa Cruz, advisors partner with undergraduates to help them explore their goals, navigate requirements, and chart meaningful pathways to graduation and beyond. Guided by the Principles of Community and the core values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), advising emphasizes respect for students’ identities and experiences while promoting reflection, responsibility, and confidence in their academic choices.
Advising Goals
Advisors promote undergraduate success by:
- Building authentic and collaborative relationships with students, recognizing and honoring their lived experience
- Guiding students to learn about and achieve important academic milestones on their journey toward graduation
- Providing relevant and accurate information about university programs, opportunities, and resources
- Empowering students to pursue and achieve degree plans that spark their interest and intellectual curiosity
- Recognizing and identifying ways to overcome barriers to successful degree completion
- Collaborating with campus partners to build a network of support for students, and to promote and advocate for continuous improvement, student success, and equitable outcomes.
Student Learning Outcomes
As a result of academic advising, students will
- Learn about and use the resources available to support their success.
- Explore their strengths and interests as they make decisions about their educational experience.
- Understand the requirements needed to complete their degree, and make academic progress to ensure timely graduation.
- Be empowered to pursue educational experiences that prepare them for post-graduation opportunities aligned with their interests and values.
