Peer Academic Success Coaches work with their fellow students with the aim of further developing academic skills and behaviors. Peer coaches also help students tap into existing strengths and past successes in learning how to adapt and thrive in the university setting. In addition to offering general support and guidance, peer coaches work with referred students on three content areas as needed: educational goal setting, strategies for exploring majors, and combatting procrastination.

Good candidates to work with an Peer Academic Success Coach include:

  • First or second year students (including first year transfer students) who want to learn about UC Santa Cruz’s academic resources to make the most of their time at the university.
  • First or second year students who have experienced academic setbacks, challenges, or a difficult transition from high school/community college and seek to enhance their academic skills and better navigate their UCSC experience.
  • First or second year students who are undecided/exploring majors, or considering alternatives to their original choice of major, and seek strategies and resources for choosing a major.
  • First or second year students who seek to improve their time management skills, especially around procrastination.
