Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

Transfer students can declare the FDM major after they pass FILM 20A and are enrolled in FILM 20C for the winter quarter.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

Students may submit an unofficial copy of their transcript along with the syllabi for any film or digital media courses previously taken. These will be reviewed for possible substitution toward the major requirements. There is a limit of two substitutions accepted toward the major requirements.

...and should take these courses their first term:

FILM 20A: Introduction to Film Studies, and one upper-division critical studies FILM course.
