Life and Health Sciences

UC Santa Cruz offers a wide range of majors focused on the life sciences. The following information is for majors in general biology, ecology and evolution, health sciences, molecular, cell and developmental biology, marine biology, neuroscience and behavior, and plant sciences. In addition to the college core course or first year seminar, first quarter UCSC students choose two lower-division courses (1 - 99), most of which satisfy a General Education requirement.

Initial placement examinations and self-assessments:
If you have no college or AP credit in math you will need to take the math placement exam in order to enroll in a math course. Chemistry offers an optional “self-assessment” to assist students in determining which first chemistry course is most appropriate for them.

Mathematics – tells you whether you must complete MATH 2: College Algebra for Calculus and/or MATH 3: Precalculus before proceeding
 to calculus (MATH 11A or MATH 19A).
Chemistry – (optional self-assessment) assists you in determining if should enroll in CHEM 1P, the preparatory Chemistry course, or if you have sufficient background to enter directly into CHEM 1A.
Spanish (Health Sciences majors) – you must take the Spanish language placement examination to enroll in any Spanish language course (previous courses or AP exams will not serve as prerequisites).

First year courses:

MATH 11A*, MATH 11B: Calculus with Applications {OR} MATH 19A*, MATH 19B: Calculus for Science, Engineering, and Mathematics

MATH 22: Introduction to Calculus of Several Variables (not required for all majors in the biological sciences)

CHEM 1A**, CHEM 1B/M, CHEM 1C/N: General Chemistry (and associated labs)

BIOL 20A: Cell and Molecular Biology (requires completion of CHEM 1B){OR}
 BIOE 20C: Ecology and Evolution (not required for the Health Science major)

SPAN 1***: Introduction to Spanish Language (for Health Sciences major only)

*or MATH 2: College Algebra for Calculus and/or MATH 3: Precalculus (dependent upon placement)

**or CHEM 1P: Preparatory Chemistry
*** or SPAN 2-4, if placed higher
