Languages, Literature and Communications

UC Santa Cruz offers a wide range of majors focused on literature, language and writing. The following information is for majors in literature, linguistics, language studies (Chinese, French, German, modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese and Spanish), and inter-disciplinary studies with a particular focus in a language: classical studies, East Asian studies, German studies Italian studies, or Latin American and Latino studies. In addition to the college core course or first year seminar, first quarter UCSC students will choose two lower-division courses (1 - 99), most of which satisfy a general education requirement.

Initial placement examinations:
Language - if you plan to study a language, or if the major requires you to have a second language, you must take an appropriate language placement examination (previous courses or AP exams will not serve as prerequisites).

First year courses:
You should also enroll in courses that will allow you to explore a major.
