Visual and Performing Arts and Media

UC Santa Cruz offers a wide range of majors focused in the visual and performing arts and media. The following information is for majors in art, film and digital media, history of art and visual culture, music and theater arts. In addition to the college core course or first year seminar, first quarter UCSC students choose two lower-division courses (1 - 99), most of which satisfy a general education requirement.

Initial placement examinations:
The Music Core Curriculum Placement Examination is required for all music majors. Before students begin their study of music theory, they take this exam. The exam is given each fall quarter prior to the start of classes.

First year courses:
While some arts programs are flexible enough to allow interested students to begin their studies as late as the sophomore year, it is advisable to enroll in the first year courses shown below (or an equivalent program). This will allow a solid preparation for further study, as well as to verify your interest in the chosen field. Please note: some courses are sequential or only offered once per year. For additional information, consult the specific Advising Cluster web site, UCSC General Catalog, the Arts Division’s web site, or contact an undergraduate adviser in the department.
