Importance of an early start:

This is a moderately course-intensive and/or sequential program, and students who intend to pursue classical studies should begin taking classes for the major in their first or second year at UCSC.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

• Classical studies has no major qualification requirements. Students should submit a petition to declare before or by their declaration deadline quarter.
• While classical studies does not have an official qualification policy, it should be noted that the major requires the successful completion of upper-division coursework in ancient Greek and/or Latin language literature. Students who are unable to successfully complete the introductory sequence in elementary ancient Greek (GREE 1 and 2) or Latin (LATN 1 and 2) language will not be able to advance to the upper-division coursework required for this major.

Frosh who intend to pursue this major should do the following things prior to the beginning of fall term...

• Review the major requirements in the General Catalog and the information on the Classical Studies website. Familiarizing yourself with the major and its requirements will give you an invaluable head-start to your college career.
• Add a customizable Classical Studies Major Planning Worksheet and sample quarter-by-quarter course plans to your UCSC Google Drive.

...and should take these courses their first term:

GREE 1: Elementary Ancient Greek OR LATN 1: Elementary Latin

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll online during your enrollment appointment. Prospective classical studies majors who have difficulty enrolling in GREE 1 or LATN 1 should sign up on the class waiting list and contact the course instructor by email.

Other Information:

Classical studies majors are enthusiastically encouraged to incorporate educational opportunities, like study abroad and/or the The UC Washington Center (UCDC) and UC Center Sacramento (UCCS) internship programs, into their plan of study.
