Getting started in History: Fall 2024 Entering Frosh
🔙
Students are admitted to UCSC with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission to UCSC does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major. Students must be declared in a major by the end of the second year (or equivalent), so learning about and preparing for a major is a primary goal for first-year students.
Importance of an early start: |
This major is not highly sequential or course intensive. Although it is advisable to begin taking courses toward the major in the first year, it is not required. |
Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major: |
The history major has no qualification requirements. All students are eligible to pursue this major, even if they did not list history on their UC Santa Cruz application. It is advisable to complete at least one lower-division history course (1–99) before declaring, but it is not required. Students who plan on majoring in history are encouraged to declare as soon as possible. Students should submit a petition to declare before or by their declaration deadline quarter. |
Frosh who intend to pursue this major should do the following things prior to the beginning of fall term... |
|
...and should take these courses their first term: |
Enroll in one lower division history class (HIS 1-99) that interests you. Exploring your interests is a great way to get started in this major! |
Special enrollment procedures: |
Enroll online during your enrollment appointment. |
Sample Academic Plan: |
Review Sample Academic Plan in the General Catalog. |
Other Information: |
History majors are enthusiastically encouraged to incorporate educational opportunities, like study abroad and/or the The UC Washington Center (UCDC) and UC Center Sacramento (UCCS) internship programs, into their plan of study. Some people can complete this degree in three years. |
