Getting started in Literature: Fall 2024 Entering Frosh

🔙

Students are admitted to UCSC with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission to UCSC does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major. Students must be declared in a major by the end of the second year (or equivalent), so learning about and preparing for a major is a primary goal for first-year students.

Importance of an early start:

This major is not highly sequential nor course intensive. Although it is advised to begin taking courses toward the major in the first year, it is not required.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

Frosh who intend to pursue this major should do the following things prior to the beginning of fall term...

If you are considering beginning language courses in your first year, review information on the Language and Applied Linguistics website to determine whether you need language placement.

The Literature Department offers language proficiency exams in many languages for students who have obtained proficiency in a language other than English through other means (i.e. heritage speakers, high school seal of biliteracy). All students who would like to take a language proficiency test are encouraged to do so. Please contact the Literature Department at litdept@ucsc.edu for more information.

...and should take these courses their first term:

One Literature 60/61-series OR 80/81-series course and/or Language course at appropriate level (if available).

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Sample Academic Plan:

Review Sample Academic Plan in the General Catalog.

Other Information:

One year (three quarters or equivalent) of college-level study of a non-English language is required for the major. It is important for students to begin taking language courses in the first or second year. Please note that for some languages, level 1 is offered only in the fall quarter.

Some people can complete this degree in three years.
