Getting Started in Earth Sciences: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UCSC with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission to UCSC does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major. Students must be declared in a major by the end of the second year (or equivalent), so learning about and preparing for a major is a primary goal for first-year students.

Importance of an early start:

This major is not highly sequential or course intensive. Although it is advisable to begin taking courses toward the major in the first year, it is not required.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

Frosh who intend to pursue this major should do the following things prior to the beginning of fall term...

  • Students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to complete all lower-division mathematics and science prerequisites appropriate to their concentration of interest prior to transfer.
  • If a student has not completed MATH 3 or above at community college they must complete the ALEKS math placement prior to enrollment for fall quarter.

...and should take these courses their first term:

If you have completed the recommended transfer course work then enroll in:
  • EART 110A: Evolution of the Earth
  • Upper-division major elective
  • EART 190: Earth Science Mentors
Every transfer student plan is unique. Students will receive an email with their articulated course work and recommendations for first quarter enrollment.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time. Students will be emailed an invitation to enroll in EART 190 and all transfer students in Earth Science are encouraged to enroll in this course.

Sample Academic Plan:

Review the Sample Academic Plan in the General Catalog.

Other Information:

If you have additional questions about enrollment, please contact the Earth and Planetary Sciences advisor.

Concentrations in the major include Geology, Ocean Science, Geophysics and Planetary Science as well as combined majors with Anthropology and Environmental Studies.
