Getting Started in Literature: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first quarter…

  • Transfer students planning to major in literature are urged to complete the equivalent of one year of college-level study of a language other than English before entering UCSC.
  • If you are considering beginning language courses at UCSC, review information on the Language and Applied Linguistics website to determine whether you need language placement.

...and should take these courses their first quarter:

  • LIT 61W, Writing and Research Methods, is recommended for any student transferring to the literature major, including those who completed the equivalent to LIT 60-61/80-81 at another college. LIT 61W is offered in the fall quarter.
  • Students who completed the equivalents to LIT 1 and LIT 60-61/80-81 at their previous institutions should take one upper-division literature course (numbered 100-199).
  • Students who did not complete the equivalents to LIT 1 and/or LIT 60-61/80-81 should take these lower-division courses in their first quarter.
  • Students who did not complete the equivalent of one year of college-level study of a language other than English should enroll in an appropriate language course in their first quarter at UCSC. Students who have this level of proficiency may contact the department to schedule a proficiency exam.
  • Students who enroll in a LIT 1 or LIT 60-61/80-81 course may choose to also take an upper-division literature course. However, no student should enroll in more than two literature courses in the first quarter.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:
