Getting Started in Literature: Fall 2024 Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

If you listed the literature major on your UCSC admission application, the Literature Department will review your transcripts and provide you with a customized plan to declare the major.

Other incoming transfer students who are interested in exploring the literature major should reach out to the Literature Department office (litdept@ucsc.edu) to schedule a time to meet with a Literature Department Advisor.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • Transfer students planning to major in literature are urged to complete the equivalent of one year of college-level study of a language other than English before entering UCSC.
  • If you are considering beginning language courses at UCSC, review information on theLanguage and Applied Linguistics website to determine whether you need language placement.
  • The Literature Department offers language proficiency exams in many languages for students who have obtained proficiency in a language other than English through other means (i.e. heritage speakers, high school seal of biliteracy). All students who would like to take a language proficiency test are encouraged to do so. Please contact the Literature Department at litdept@ucsc.edu for more information.

...and should take these courses their first term:

  • Students who completed the equivalents to LIT 1 and LIT 60-61/80-81 at their previous institutions should take one upper-division literature course (numbered 100-199).
  • Students who did not complete the equivalents to LIT 1 and/or LIT 60-61/80-81 should take these lower-division courses in their first quarter.
  • Students who need to complete the language proficiency requirement through coursework should enroll in an appropriate language course in their first quarter at UCSC. Students who enroll in a LIT 1 or LIT 60-61/80-81 course may choose to also take an upper-division literature course. However, no student should enroll in more than two literature courses in the first quarter.
  • If you are interested in the Creative Writing Concentration should take a lower-division creative writing course by their second quarter at UCSC.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Enroll in an alternate literature course. Please feel free to get in touch with the Literature Department staff (litdept@ucsc.edu) for more information.

Special enrollment procedures:
