Getting Started in Philosophy: Fall 2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog. Transfer students wishing to major in philosophy are encouraged to consult with the Philosophy Department undergraduate advisor as soon as possible.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • Students who wish to receive credit for prior lower division college work should email a copy of their unofficial transcript to philadvi@ucsc.edu. Generally, equivalent introductory courses taken elsewhere are accepted in substitution for UCSC philosophy introductory courses (except for Introduction to Logic, which must be taken at UCSC). Upper-division courses taken at four-year universities may be transferred by petition.
  • For upper-division petitions, please submit a class syllabus and/or reading list, which will be reviewed by the Undergraduate Program Director.

...and should take these courses their first term:

PHIL 100C:The Empiricists (Fall), PHIL 9: Introduction to Logic (Summer 2024, Winter)

Note: Please do not take PHIL 7 in fall. PHIL 7 does not meet the requirement for the major and PHIL 9 cannot be taken after taking PHIL 7.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact the major advisor at philadvi@ucsc.edu.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

Other Information:
