Getting Started in Psychology: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

If you listed this major on your UCSC admission application, your record has been screened for major preparation. Review transfer screening, getting started, and major qualification requirement sections in the General Catalog.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

...and should take these courses their first term:

  • PSYC 10: Intro to Developmental Psychology (if equivalent course was not taken at previous institution), or an upper division Psychology class, and
  • PSYC 100: Research Methods in Psychology (7 credits)

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

  • Psychology transfer students who follow the special enrollment procedures will be given permission codes to enroll in the two recommended courses.
  • Any one of the Psychology Major Approved Outside Courses for the Psychology Major.

Special enrollment procedures:

Emails with suggested courses and permission codes will be sent to Psychology transfer students who send in their unofficial transcript prior to July 1st.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

The suggested course load is two major classes per quarter; if students do not have additional general education requirements to satisfy, they can utilize the third course each quarter to pursue other interests.

Other Information:

Students considering Psychology as a major should consult with an undergraduate advisor or peer advisor as early as possible and attend our Summer Transfer Presentation.
