Getting Started in Environmental Studies/Biology Combined Major: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:	Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.
Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…	Ensure your official transcripts arrive at UC Santa Cruz by July 1; all official test scores, including AP scores, must arrive by July 15. Complete parts 1 & 2 of the Slug Orientation Course process to receive your enrollment appointment date.
...and should take these courses their first term:	STAT 7/L: Statistical Methods for Biological, Environmental, and Health Sciences (with lab) One of the following: BIOE 20C or BIOL 20A or CHEM 1A/1B/1C/1N (if not completed prior to transfer)

Special enrollment procedures:	Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time. We strongly recommend meeting with an ENVS advisor before enrollment to discuss your transfer credit and create an academic plan.
Skills important for success in this major:	Critical reading and thinking skills, analytical writing abilities and cultural analysis as well as skills in mathematics and formal reasoning.
Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:	The suggested course load is two major classes per quarter; if students do not have additional general education requirements to complete, they can utilize the third course each quarter to pursue a minor, do an ENVS internship, or take other classes of interest.
Other Information:	Transfer students need to complete all lower division courses, including STAT 7/L, before enrolling in ENVS 100/L in winter quarter. However, students who are taking their last lower division requirement in fall (STAT 7/L), may petition to enroll in an upper division environmental studies elective in fall, before completing ENVS 100/L in winter.
