Getting Started in Latin American and Latino Studies / Politics Combined: 2023-2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review transfer information and policy, getting started, and major qualification requirement sections in the General Catalog. Contact lalsadvising@ucsc.edu with any questions, including questions about transfer courses in politics and LALS, and to create an academic plan to graduate. Transfer students typically declare the LALS/politics combined major in their second quarter at UCSC.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • If you have taken college-level transferable classes in politics or LALS, please contact the undergraduate advisor.
  • Review upcoming 2023-24 courses for politics and LALS to start thinking about which courses you want to take.
  • Contact LALS Advising to make an academic plan with the courses required to graduate.

...and should take these courses their first term:

  • LALS 1: Introduction to Latin American and Latino Studies and LALS 100: Concepts and Theories in Latin American and Latino Studies. Students may select an upper-division politics course for their third class from the list of required courses.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact LALS Advising. Enrollment in LALS 1 and 100 is guaranteed for LALS/POLI combined major students.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

LALS strongly encourages students to further enrich their education by studying abroad, participating in community-based internships, and/or conducting undergraduate research. To learn more about these opportunities, contact LALS Advising or review information on our website about Study Abroad and getting started in Undergraduate Research.

Other Information:

Prior to the 2022-23 academic year, students in the combined major were required to become proficient in Spanish or Portuguese. Though second language proficiency is no longer required, students are encouraged to continue or begin language instruction as part of their major, and to enrich their education by taking LALS courses taught in Spanish while at UCSC. See the undergraduate advisor for more information.
