Getting Started in Latin American and Latino Studies / Politics Combined: Fall 2024 Entering Transfers

🔙

Students are admitted to UC Santa Cruz with a "proposed major" in most cases, and later petition to officially declare the major. Admission does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, although transfer students' records are screened for preparation for many majors at the time of admission. Junior transfer students must be formally declared by the deadline in their second quarter of enrollment.

Qualification requirements and/or prerequisites for the major:

Review Major Qualification Requirements in the General Catalog.

Contact lalsadvising@ucsc.edu with any questions, including questions about transfer courses (approved lower-division LALS transfer courses are listed here) in LALS, and to create an academic plan for the major. Transfer students typically declare the LALS/politics combined major in their second quarter at UCSC.

Transfer students who intend to pursue this major should do the following prior to the beginning of their first term…

  • If you have taken transferable classes in politics or LALS, please contact the LALS advisor.
  • Review courses for politics and LALS offered in the upcoming year to decide when to take required courses (it is especially important to take LALS 100 in winter quarter, and 100A and 100L in spring quarter).
  • Contact LALS Advising to make an academic plan for the major.

...and should take these courses their first term:

Transfer students should take at least two major courses based on their prior coursework and remaining requirements. Any remaining lower-division requirements should be taken in the first quarter. Contact the LALS Advisor to get an academic plan.

If unable to enroll in the courses listed above:

Contact LALS Advising. Enrollment in at least two major courses is guaranteed for LALS/politics combined major students.

Special enrollment procedures:

Enroll in classes during your online enrollment appointment time.

Although not required for the major, students in this major might benefit from:

In addition to courses offered at UCSC, students may fulfill elective requirements with appropriate courses taken while participating in a Global Learning study away program, such as the LALS Global Internship Program or UCDC. It is also helpful to start looking into Undergraduate Research as early as possible, and majors should plan to take the LALS research course and research lab, LALS 100A + LALS 100L, in the spring of their first year.

Other Information:

Many students with LALS majors are able to double major or add a minor to their LALS plan. Talk to the LALS advisor for more information.
