Session 1 Workshops (10:15 - 11:15 AM):

1A: Advising on the Pathway to Graduate School (Merrill 102)

Join Sara Sanchez, GANAS Graduate Program Director, HSI Initiatives, and Maria Fernanda Alcantara, HSI Project Consultant, for this interactive session to learn about how to guide undergraduates in utilizing relevant and timely information, tools, and strategies to embark on the path to graduate school exploration and preparation. Bring your questions about how to help your undergraduates navigate the graduate school application process and submit for admission to graduate programs.

1B. Teaching Higher-Order Thinking Skills through Academic Advising (Crown 208)

As academic advisors, we serve as educators outside of the classroom who empower students to become autonomous lifelong learners and informed global citizens. Yet with the demands of juggling multiple functions while managing a caseload that can surpass 300 students, how can we also strive to teach critical thinking through advising? This presentation draws on Bloom’s Taxonomy, identifying practices that advisors may already have in place that they can strategically utilize to foster their students’ analytical, evaluative, and creative thinking skills. This session, led by Merrill College Advisor C. Wakaba Futamura, will provide participants, new and seasoned advisors alike, with the opportunity to exchange best practices, discuss institutionally specific challenges, and suggest corresponding solutions to more effectively promote higher-order thinking skills.

Session 2 Workshops (1:15 - 2:15 PM):

2A: Post-Pandemic Realities & Narratives: How trauma affects our community of learners (Merrill 102)

Join Liz Moya, Renaissance Scholars Associate Director, for a learning and interactive workshop that will focus on how trauma continues to affect our UCSC community who have experienced significant challenges throughout the post-pandemic world(s) we are maneuvering today. This session will focus on how individuals, from various backgrounds, have been exposed to trauma during the pandemic and how we can best utilize trauma-informed techniques to incorporate a healthy and safe environment at UC Santa Cruz. We will present how trauma is related to our neurological and cognitive production and behaviors. You will be able to participate in role play and other interactive activities which will help us engage with effective tools when we work with students who may have developed long-term trauma while experiencing the pandemic. Whether you are working with students on developing academic plans, teaching students in our classroom settings, or providing holistic support, trauma induced behaviors and symptoms have presented itself in a variety of ways. Also, as trauma informed practitioners or trauma advocates, we always need to take care of ourselves to do this work effectively. We will share how we practice self-care strategies to help us grow our trauma informed care approaches.

2B. Senior Student Panel (Merrill Cultural Center)

Many of our seniors started at UCSC in fall 2019 as frosh, or in fall 2021 as transfer students. As an advising community, we know that the class of 2023 has been tremendously resilient. Come to this session to hear from our 2023 graduates - the positives, the challenges, what they have learned going to college during this time and of course their hopes/plans for the future! Join Winnie Tang as she facilitates this student panel which includes:

Innovations and Initiatives Showcase (2:30-3:30 PM)

The Innovations and Initiatives Showcase and Networking Session promotes the sharing of ideas, information, and advising practices as a core part of our advising culture at UCSC. It is one way we can facilitate relationship building across our offices and work areas. We encourage you to visit with showcase participants and be in community.
