Morning Workshops:
1. Academic Support for our Latino/a Students
Our campus is poised to gain the HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) designation, likely within the next few years. What are the particular academic challenges that our Latino/a students face at UC Santa Cruz? What can we learn from current students that will help us support our growing Latina/o student population? What academic strategies support first generation students in transitioning to and excelling at a research institution? Join Associate Professor of LALS Gabriela Arredondo, Professor of LALS Jonathan Fox, and LALS Undergraduate Adviser Alessandra Alvares for a presentation that will provide some important background information for effectively identifying and supporting the academic challenges faced by this population of students, and some ways in which advisers (and advising programs) can support them in excelling academically and in persisting to graduation.

2. Double Majors: Faculty Perspectives
More and more, advisers find themselves talking with students who want to pursue double majors or major/minor programs. What are the benefits and drawbacks of pursuing more than a single major, and what is the best way to advise students considering double majors? Join us for this panel of UCSC faculty to hear their perspectives on this issue.
3. When the Goal is a Health Career: Success Strategies
This workshop will provide advisers with information about required courses for health professional schools (medical, dental, optometry, nursing, etc.) along with ways to gain the clinical, volunteer, and work experience necessary to put forward a successful application. Presenters Alan Wong (STEM Career Adviser in UCSC’s Career Center), Caiti Maskrey (Peer Adviser) and Douglas Anderson (former Peer Adviser, recently accepted by Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine) will also provide information about "ready-to-use" online resources, including prerequisites on the Career Center’s website, an email distribution list for pre-health students, and sample 4-year plans from the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). Bring your questions!

Afternoon Workshops:
4. Transfer Student Voices: On the Path to their Goals
Transfer students have academic advising needs that are very different from those of students who join us as frosh. How can the advising community best support this population of students in clarifying their goals and developing plans to achieve them? Join us to hear directly from a panel of transfer students about how they developed their educational goals, how those goals may have changed since beginning at UCSC, and how the information and advising they received from us has affected their decisions. David Del Mundo, Undergraduate Adviser for Mathematics, will introduce and facilitate this panel.
5. Moving to Plan B: When the First Major Doesn’t Work Out
Majors with admission and/or disqualification policies have increased in recent years, which means we are seeing more students who must transition to different majors – sometimes late in their academic careers. Join this brainstorming session to identify strategies we might consider to address the advising needs of this group of students. Advising Coordinator Stacey Sketo-Rosener will provide an overview and will facilitate the brainstorm, and Career Adviser Katrina Cope will provide information about the affect a particular major might have on a student’s future career prospects. Bring your ideas to share at this interactive discussion session.

6. Current Mental Health Challenges
Today’s university students are faced with mental health challenges very different from those that previous generations faced. What are the most common mental health challenges our students struggle with while working toward their degrees? What do we, as advisers, need to know about these challenges in order to best encourage and support students to meet their educational goals? Amy Mandell, Case Manager in UCSC’s Counseling And Psychological Services program, will provide an overview of these issues and discuss ways in which advisers can best support students who are experiencing mental health difficulties.
