Morning Workshops

Workshop I: Mental Health Matters: Working with the Distressed (and Sometimes Distressing) Student

Most professional advisers have worked with a student with severe emotional and/or mental health issues at some point in their career. Our current population includes students with emotional and mental health issues very different from students even ten years ago, and these issues can have a significant impact on a student's ability to thrive academically and achieve educational goals. This workshop, led by counseling psychologists Jerry Lee and MaryJan Murphy (Co-Directors of UCSC's Counseling and Psychological Services), will focus on what advisers need to know about the emotional and mental health challenges our students face today, and on strategies advisers can use to work effectively with students who struggle with mental health issues and/or are in distress.

Workshop II: Serving Those Serving Us: Advising Veterans, Active Service Members, Guards, and Reservists

Don't you wish it was as easy as going down a checklist when it comes to advising special populations like student veterans? Actually, they do, too! Checklists are one of the things student veterans are looking for from their academic advisers. Find out what else military service students are looking for from you and what you need to know to be of service to them. Come hear the advising do's and don'ts from a student veteran, Josh Karrasch, Coordinator of STARS Veterans Education Team Support (VETS) and President of Student Veterans of America at UCSC, Jill Schontag, Crown College Academic Adviser and thesis author of Back from Iraq: The Unique Counseling Implications of the Returning Soldier, and Mark Neenan, former UCSC Psychology Undergraduate Adviser, DRC Service Coordinator, and current STARS Special Projects Coordinator.

Workshop III: An Overview of Undergraduate Financial Aid at UC Santa Cruz and How We Can Address Pressing Financial Issues for Students and Their Familes

Many of our students and their families have been affected by the recent downturn in our economy, and some students have responded by increasing their work hours, withdrawing from school temporarily, or using other strategies that ultimately delay reaching their educational goals. Ann Draper, Financial Aid Director, and Liz Martin-Garcia, Financial Aid Analyst and Adviser, will lead this session to provide an overview of the undergraduate financial aid program at UC Santa Cruz and to address what advisers need to know to effectively advise and refer students who are experiencing financial difficulties. They will also address the specific challenges facing AB540 students, and some of the important issues advisers need to be aware of in working with this population.

Afternoon Workshops

Workshop IV: Well-Prepared and Highly Motivated Undergraduates

Who are they, and what are they looking for in their educational experience? Marlene Robinson, UCSC's Honors and Awards Coordinator, will lead this presentation and round table discussion to learn more about the needs of these students and ways in which we can best advise them. Find out about existing programs and the campus response to their need to be educationally challenged and engaged. Visit us at: http://honors.ucsc.edu/.

Workshop V: First Year Advising: A Philosophy, Not a Checklist

First Year Advising (FYA) was developed during the 2004 - 2005 academic year, and has continued to grow and develop since then. Join Crown College Academic Preceptor Maria Acosta-Smith and Cowell College Academic Adviser Danielle Niland for a presentation on how the colleges are currently administering the FYA program at UCSC. The presentation will cover FYA's goals, learning objectives, and advising philosophy.
