Human Psychology, Culture and Society

Students whose interests are focused in human psychology, culture and society may choose to pursue UCSC majors in anthropology (or a combined major in anthropology/earth sciences), cognitive science, community studies, critical race and ethnic studies, feminist studies, language studies, Latin American and Latino studies, legal studies, linguistics, politics, psychology or sociology. In addition to the college core course, first quarter frosh enroll in two or more lower-division courses (1 - 99), for a total of 15-19 credits, their first term.

INITIAL PLACEMENT

Students in this cluster may need to assess their placement in the following subjects prior to enrolling for their first term:

  • Mathematics: The following majors in this cluster require math placement: combined anthropology/Earth sciences; cogntive science; and psychology. The linguistics major requires either foreign language or mathematics competency, so math placement may be required. Determine your math placement by completing an assessment in ALEKS. If you completed a college-level math course, or scored 3 or better on an AP calculus exam, or 5 or better on an IBH mathematics exam, you may be able to use that for placement instead of the ALEKS assessment. Math assessment indicates the mathematics course where you should begin.
  • Language (for Latin American & Latino Studies and LALS combined majors, language studies, and linguistics). Since all Latin American and Latino studies majors are expected to learn to read, speak and write Spanish or Portuguese, you may need a placement exam(s) if you will be enrolling in any Spanish course, or in a Portuguese language course above level 1. The language studies major requires advanced language competency, and the linguistics major requires either foreign language or mathematics competency. Information about language placement is on the Languages and Applied Linguistics website.
